Penny Arcade / Re: 2048
« on: September 13, 2017, 06:12:50 AM »
The key to this game is to pack your highest tile into a corner and keep it there.  There's a few strategy videos/sites out there that outline the strategy.  Once you get the hang of it, you're high scores will take a significant jump and 2048 won't be too far away.

But if you just move around randomly in all directions, yeah, you probably won't get much further than 64.

Oh, and I never did get up to 16k.  I eventually found out there was a version with undo (which, if you see boards with 16k or higher, it was likely done on this version).  I did get it using that, but it felt cheap because with undo, you can basically go on forever.  Making a mistake has no real consequences, and the game becomes trivial.  So I got away from it for a while, but every now and again I'll play it for fun.

Yeah.  It almost seems like Nintendo got new leadership at some point...

You are aware that Nintendo's (former) CEO, Satoru Iwata, died back in 2015, aren't you?  And yes, the person in charge since then has gone a different direction than him.

Updated the Fastest S-Grade Times with 24 new records since it was last updated. Expect to see videos for them uploaded eventually.

Did you ever upload these, TopStar?  I'd love to take a look at some of them.

I was working on B. Mexico tonight, and while I did improve my personal best quite a bit, I'm still about 2.2 seconds off from your time.  I even finally figured out the skip the yellow bar and get 2 tree runs trick which saves time AND give me a few more stars.  But that wasn't enough, so then I tried a bunch of other strategies, most of which failed, but the best I could could come up with is to not hit the last switch and shortcut across towards the finish line every lap.  But yeah, I'm at 2:02.8 and I'm at a loss for how to squeeze out a few more seconds.

Offline / A funny thing
« on: April 03, 2017, 06:02:06 AM »
You know, given this is a racing game, it's kind of funny how neglected the speed records tend to be.  I mean, TopStar and Aaron were about the only ones who worked at the beelining records, and only TopStar seems to care about the Fastest S-Rank times.

But I've been playing Excitebots off and on again recently, and honestly, I just can't bring myself to care about score records anymore.  Maybe I've just been watching too many speed runs of other games on YouTube, but the idea of speed-running Excitebots actually has much more appeal to me now.  So yeah, I've started working on my fastest S-Rank times and enjoy just running through all the courses (in order) as quickly as possible while still getting S-Ranks.

I think part of the appeal for me is this allows me to try different paths through courses than what I would normally take if I was just farming, plus, you're more focused on gathering Stars quickly and efficiently, removing any excess stars so that you only get exactly what you need.

Wii U / Re: Nintendo Switch (NX)
« on: March 11, 2017, 11:02:37 PM »
Well, the Nintendo Switch was released this last week... Yay?  Honestly, the launch lineup was pretty meh for me:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Obviously the stand out game here, but it's also available for the Wii U, which I already own. I mean, graphically speaking, the Switch isn't much more powerful than the Wii U, and still isn't as powerful as the XBox One or PS4, so how much better looking can it actually be?

Just Dance 2017 - Again, I could just buy it for the Wii U... or the Wii for that matter.  Or I could just not buy it all, since, you know, it's Just Dance 2017. :P

1-2-Switch - Looks like a tech demo game like Wii Sports or Nintendoland. It's probably ok, but nothing to get too excited about and certainly not worth buying the system for.

Super Bomberman R - Again, this looks like a cool enough game, but it's not a system-seller.

Skylanders Imaginators - Another re-release of a game that's available on every other console.

There's a few download-only games that are available as well, most of which have also been released elsewhere, however there are a few that are new:

Fast RMX - A F-Zero style racing game.  It looks fairly cool.

I am Setsuna - A Japanese-style RPG if you're into that type of thing.  I'm not.

Snipperclips - A puzzle game of some sort.  I've heard it's ok.

What's more, there's not many games coming out in the near-future, either:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Comes out in April.  From what I can tell, it's a slight graphical update of the Wii U version with all the DLC included (which I finally got around to buying not that long ago) and a few new game modes.  I can't see myself double-dipping for this, but it you don't own a Wii U or never got it, it's probably worth it.

Redout - Another fairly cool looking, fast racing game that's in the style of F-Zero/Wipeout.  I might be interested in this if it wasn't for the fact that I noticed that this game is also on Steam... probably for cheaper, too.

Really, the interesting games which might make this system worth owning aren't coming out for some time: Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem Warriors, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are not coming out until Fall/Christmas of this year.  Personally, I can't see much reason for getting one right now.  IMO, wait for a price drop and/or interesting bundle after some of the better games start coming out.  Until then, stick to your Wii U's and PCs (or any other consoles you might already own).

For that matter, just stick Excitebots in and play that again. :D :P :D :P :D

Game Reviews / Neon Drive - First impressions/Quick Review
« on: March 04, 2017, 04:49:58 AM »
So, I've been looking around on Steam lately for racing/driving games.  Mostly seem to find driving simulators more focused on "reality" than fun, but I came across a cool looking game called "Neon Drive" for $10 and decided what the heck, I'll give it a shot.

Visuals:
This game is gorgeous, IMO.  It's rockin' a classic 80's neon vibe that's just spot on.  The game is fast and fluid and has a great aesthetic.

Sound/Music:
So, this game is more of a Rhythm game than a Racing game (more on that in a bit).  As such, you'll be listening to some rockin' music.  I personally found the music great and it definitely jives well with the 80's theme of the game.

Gameplay:
So, as I mentioned, this is really more of a Rhythm game than a racing game.  Your car will be on a 4-track road, and you move between tracks with the arrow keys.  As you drive along, obstacles with come up in your path and you'll need to navigate around them.  You'll find that your movement coincides with the music, and in fact, the key to the game is using the musical cues to help you know when to move.

This game is tough... and I mean TOUGH!  You'll die... A LOT.  But it never feels unfair.  When you mess up, you'll know it was because your reaction was off by just a little bit, or you moved left when you should have went right... or you meant to go 2 to the right but you fat-fingered it and went 3 instead.  But, each level does have some checkpoints so you won't get set back TOO far and you can just keep trying and trying until you get it right.  This game is all about memorization and moving to the music.  You'll have to practice each course a lot before you can truly master it.  I've only just begun, and I did (barely) manage to beat the course on "normal" (e.g easy) difficulty, but after that, there's a Hard and Insane difficulty to work on as well where you and the music move even faster and your reflexes are pushed to their limit.

Overall:
In the end, I'd have to give this game a rating of:
Van Halen/VHS Tapes  :o :P

This game is pretty cool and fun, and for $10, not a bad deal.  It's a bit short, but the extra difficulties allow for more replayability.

Well, I did find a phone number.  (A simple google search will give it to you.)  Very seriously considering giving it a ring during business hours.  Gave it a call tonight to see if it was legit, and it appears to be so (obviously no one answered because it was after midnight, but the answering machine message seemed normal).

I do wonder if I would get anywhere, or just the runaround/hung up on.  One wonders if a concentrated effort of all of us calling them around the same time might have an effect...

15
Re-releasing ExciteBots on the Wii U was something I had been anticipating...only I was anticipating it with online.  >:( $19.99 without the game's best feature? Not sold.

As far as the Switch goes, I think I'm only going to buy one if a sequel game to EBTR comes out for it.

Gotta agree.  Excitebots without the online racing?!?  What's even the point?  Might as well just pop in my old Excitebots disk into my Wii.  At least there I already have everything unlocked.

Speaking of which, good luck unlocking everything without online betting to help you increase your stars.  Holy crap, just thinking about what a grind that would be to do entirely offline... Ugh.

As for the Switch... It has a few intriguing titles.  Maybe I'll get it at some point, but an Excite game from Monster Games would seal the deal in an instant.  Actually, pretty much any racing game from Monster Games would seal the deal, for that matter.  I was really thinking they'd announce one as a launch title like Excite Truck was for the Wii, but maybe the game needs more time to be developed first.  I'd rather they took their time and made it good than rush something bad out... So I will wait patiently like I've done for the past... how many years has it been?  Dang it Joom, by the time the next Excite game comes out, I'll be using your moniker! :P ::) :'(

PC Games Discussion / Well, I finally did it...
« on: January 15, 2017, 08:36:52 PM »
I'd been wanting to do it for some time, but I finally plunked down the money for a new computer: i7 processor, Nvidia 1080 graphics card, 16 GB of ram, SSD hard drive.  It wasn't cheap, but it never was going to be.  If you want something this beefy, you gotta plunk down the money.

The funny thing is, when I went in, my original intention was to buy a new motherboard/processor/ram/graphics card and build it myself.  However, after talking with one of the guys at the store, who's specialty was building PCs, he informed me that, unless I REALLY wanted the "experience" of building my own PC, it would actually be cheaper to buy a pre-built one.  So I did.

So I was finally able to get Doom working and holy crap, it's amazing.  Only played the first level so far, but man, does it kick ass!

17
Very interesting, Flash.  I missed that.  Who knows if it'll lead to anything, but we still don't know what Monster Games is working on right now, and we know they're working on something...

18
...it's better to build maps where certain classes have their opportunity to shine instead of trying to make all classes or characters fit on every map.

While I agree to a point, things should still be balanced enough that every bot has a chance on every course.  When you get to point of "pick this bot on this map to win", you've failed, because that's not really that far removed from "pick the Roach on every map to win."  I agree these things can be hard to balance completely, but there should always be at least 2 types of bots that can succeed on a given course.

Penny Arcade / 2048
« on: November 01, 2016, 04:17:47 AM »
So there's this little game called 2048 that I'm a little bit addicted too.  It's one of those games that's easy to pick up and learn, but difficult to master.  The goal is simple: Keep combining like numbers together to double them with the eventual goal of getting up to 2048.  Now, while that will seem challenging at first (took me a while to get my first 2048), after a while, it'll almost seem like child's play.  The good new?  You can keep going!

I've been at it for some time and have gotten pretty good.  The highest tile I've ever achieved is 8192... and I've done it a few times now.  I'm slowly closing in on 16384, but at that level, there's ZERO room for error and one bad move and it's game over.  The closest I've ever gotten was getting a 8192, 4096, and 2048, plus some other change, but made a small mistake and, like I said, it was game over.  I feel like if I ever do get 16384, it may be time to hang it up, because going for a 32768 is just silly.

Anyways, not sure if you could get it in the Penny Arcade or not, but it might be a fun addition.

20
Just stumbled upon this old thread (isn't that on after This Old House? :P) of mine, which got me thinking.  I still stand by most of what I said there, and Big & Dragon had a couple cool ideas as well.

In addition, here's a few things I've been thinking about recently:
- More balanced bots.  There was only ever maybe 3-4 bots that were viable in the competitive scene: Most people ran the roach, I think I made a pretty convincing case for the Hummingbird at the end, and I think the Bat and Lizard could have been good in the right hands.  There may be a couple more I'm forgetting, but that's about it.  The Squid, Mantis, and Turtle were worthless in serious competitions, and there were a lot of "middling" bots that, while ok, weren't ever going to be competitive either.

If you look at modern competitive gaming (wither it be MOBAs, RTSs, MMORPGSs, or anything else with a variety of non-similar playable classes/races), these games are made or broke on their balance.  NOBODY wants to play an under-performing class, and EVERYONE wants to play the over-performing ones.  Like I said: look at the Roach in Excitebots.

Now, does this mean I think all the bots should be like the Roach?  NO!  Different bots should excel at different things.  The roach was great for jumping, spinning, and comboing.  However, it's drifting and tree-running skills should have been nerfed, and it's red-bar should have been slower like the Lizard's.  Meanwhile, bots like Turtle and Mantis should have had their tree runs and drifts boosted.  For example, if you could manage to get the turtle through that big tree-run on Platinum Tasmania, you should be getting 2-3 times as many stars as someone taking a Roach through the same tree run.  Not fair?  Yes it is.  While the Roach is busy racking up a huge score jump-comboing and spinning, the Turtle isn't getting anywhere near the same amount, so there needs to be a trade-off.  By giving each bot real bonuses as well as drawbacks, you balance the game.  And you keep releasing patches and updates until things are balanced.

- More balanced Courses.
Piggy-backing on what was just said, you need to balance the courses as well to provide opportunities for all types of scoring so that the different bots all have opportunities to rack up stars in their given areas of expertise.  While many of the later courses in Excitebots were somewhat balanced, some of those earlier ones weren't.  School Mexico comes to mind, because there were very few tree runs but a ton of jump combos.

Anyways, these two ideas are at the core of what I'd like to see from a new Excitebots game: A more balanced multiplayer where each bot could be competitive, but in different/unique ways.  Where bots like the turtle and squid could go toe-to-toe with the Roach and be able to win.  There should never be a "best choice" bot... the "best choice" should be based on your play-style and skill.

So what would you want from a new Excitebots game?

Wii U / Re: Nintendo Switch (NX)
« on: October 20, 2016, 01:04:28 PM »
DUTS, I was about to post this myself!!!  :o :'( :o

I've never really gotten that much into the portable thing, since I usually have to drive myself wherever I'm going, so the whole "take it with you" concept just kind of falls flat for me.  I'm sure it'll be popular with some, though.

I'm still interested in seeing what games they're going to be coming out with for it.  All I could see in the trailer was Zelda (which we've known was coming for the last 4 years), Mario Kart and Splatoon (which are already available on the Wii U), and some random sports games (meh).  I'm still waiting for the Excite-Whatever announcement... that's what will get me hyped.

Cody, it's one of those things where, while there's been no "official" announcement, due to a job posting by Monster Games, we can infer that they're working on a new (racing) game.

So, what we know for sure:
1. Nintendo is coming out with a new console code-named the "NX" this fall (Confirmed).
2. Monster Games is working on a new game, which is probably a racing game, and is probably for the NX.

What we don't know:
1. What "type" of racing game it is.  While everyone here is hoping and speculating that it's going to be an "Excite" game, it's only just that: hope and speculation.  It could just as easily be: A new Diddy Kong racing game, a new Wave Race game, a new F-Zero game, or something else entirely new.
2. When it will be released.  Again, hope and speculation has people saying "release game" but there is literally zero evidence that this is the case.  Now, we DO know that it's been a while since Monster Games has released a game and that Excite Truck was a release game for the Wii, but that literally means squadoosh here.

People like to hope and speculate, Cody.  That's all that's going on here.

27
Yeah, the Wii U was really dry for racing games... Basically Mario Kart 8 and that's it.  There were a couple other mediocre titles but nothing to get all that excited about.  Even the PS4 and X1 have more options (although most of them are realistic-style racers).  I feel like the Racing genre as a whole is really in a funk right now.  Excitebots 2 is the game we need, but not the one we deserve. :D :-* :P

28
Well, I've know about the NX for some time, but not that Monster Games is developing a Racing Game for it.  If you recall, Excite Truck was a launch title for the Wii, so maybe, just MAYBE, we'll be seeing a new Excite game for the NX at launch.  I've been somewhat on the fence about what I've been hearing about the NX, but if they put out an Excite game with it at launch?  I'm there.

29
Somehow I missed this thread, too, Top, and I'm not sure how.  I agree with a lot of what's been said so far...

1. The thrill of the new high score.  Nothing compares figuring some new stuff out, working it into your line, and then going online and just CRUSHING it and getting a new personal best.

2. The agony of just killing it on your first lap, and then blowing it all on the second.  Should've listened to Han Solo, "That's great kid, now don't get cocky!"

3. Coming back from a race to see a familiar face in the room (Dynam0, Joom, etc...) and knowing that it was easy-wins-time was over and that I'd have to start trying.

4. Starting a new profile and seeing how long it would take people to figure it out.

5. Figuring out someone else's new profile and telling TopStar to "book 'em." :P

Honorable mention: Having a great race, setting a new personal best, and STILL getting Joomed.  "Just wish I could have gotten good at the game before they shut down the servers..." he says. ::)

FPS's were built for keyboard/mouse...  ;)

Exactly!  I mean, especially if you're talking about the granddaddy of all FPS's, Doom.  Just seem sacrilegious to play it on a console.  I've seen the PC version in stores like Target and I'm sure you could find it on Amazon, so you should be able to buy the disc to install it.  I'm not sure if you'd need a Blu ray drive, though.  Might want to look closely.

PC Games Discussion / Doom and Overwatch
« on: June 09, 2016, 03:47:32 AM »
So, there's been a couple big PC releases recently that have been getting a lot of attention and have me genuinely intrigued.

The first is Doom.  While things initially looked sketchy in the way they handled the pre-release, it's actually been getting a lot of great reviews.  The things I've been seeing is that the single-player is probably one of the best single-player FPSs to come out in a long time.  It's fast, fluid, and everything that Doom 3 wasn't, and what a Doom game SHOULD be.  It's also quite long and will take you some time to finish.  I mean, even Yahtzee like it, and he can find things to nit-pick about even some of the best games.

Then there's Overwatch, which, if you haven't heard about this game yet, I'm going to assume you've been living under a rock and don't know what the internet is.  How did you even get here?  Anyways, it also looks like a lot of fun.  It's a multiplayer only FPS, but it's been doing a lot of things right.  It has 21 different classes to play, but they all have their role to play in certain situations.  You can change which class you're playing on the fly, so you're never chained to your choice.  Also, a big thing that's really making me interested is the fact that you don't have to "level up" to get all your abilities.  You get all your abilities from the start and will always be on a level playing ground.  The only deciding factor is your skill, which I think is something we all agree is a good thing (remember that game called... I think it was "Excite-butts" or something... that was skill based and I think the general consensus here was that it was pretty alright).  Tangents aside, it might be a fun game to group up and play, if anyone here would be into that sort of thing.  It's bright and colorful and cheerful and just looks fun.

Anyways, those are the games I'm currently looking into.  Anyone have any experience with either of these and want to chime in?

Joom,

I remember downloading this quite some time ago when it was a very early tech demo.  It was kind of cool, but it always seemed more like a crash simulator than an honest racer.

I'd have thought that, after Excitebots, you would have had your fill of crashes. :P

Should be a good movie.  Though it shouldn't even be a question - super strength / super speed / invulnerability / flight / laser eyes / x-ray vision, against a guy with a fast car and cool toys...  :P

Going to watch it, though... ;)
