ExciteBots: Trick Racing / What???????
« on: June 16, 2017, 01:34:40 PM »
Just came across this.  It was posted August 2016, and he makes it sound like he just recorded it.  And I don't recognize any of those names.

Since Flash was nice enough to bring the news about the newly announced "Nintendo NX", I thought I'd go looking.  Surprised how many mentions of ExciteBots (and Excite Trucks) I saw in the comments on this post.  Could we really have a shot?

Well, after finding and listening again to all those old ExciteBots related songs from back in the day, I thought I'd throw them up for easy access in case somebody happens by and checks them out.

A few of these are original music that I did, but most are cover rewrites.  And a good friend of mine from Down Under (Schprocket) stepped in to sing lead on "IAmTheFarmer", him being a big Beatles fan.

Anyway, nothing fancy, just a link to the folder I uploaded them to.  Just click on a song to play it in your browser.  I did get a kick out of listening to them all again...

I'm still looking around weekly for new PC racers coming out, and was just checking a list of racers due out in 2016 and 2017.  Some aren't too bad, but this one caught my eye.  Currently in Early Access...

PC Games Discussion / Still looking for racers...
« on: February 27, 2015, 06:08:17 PM »
Getting into Toxxik just to be back in the FPS thing, but I'm still looking for racers.  I was just browsing through Steam and came across a cool looking little game call "Toybox Turbos".

Way back in the day I used to play a little racer called Re-Volt (see video below).  Loved that game, and this game reminds me a little of that.  So I think I'm going to get it.  The downside is that the multiplayer only allows up to 4 players, but that's not bad.

Anyway, I think I'm going to pick this one up (Toybox Turbos) to get back into a little online racing again...

Well, because of my less than adequate internet connection, I wasn't sure what was going to happen to all the attachments and images when we changed hosts.  I couldn't download or archive them.  Top jumped in and downloaded the whole thing, and held it till I was able to get the forums back up and running.

He just reuploaded all attachments last night, and after the requisite problems, errors, and knock down drag out fight with forum crap, they are now back in place and functional.

Without his help, all attachments and images would probably have been lost.  So, while I'm continuing the battle with getting everything (or most of it) back up and running here, you can all give Top a big thank you for that part.  It was good to see the old screenshots again.

I don't care what those other guys say, Top, you're okay...  :P

Finally made it back.  Sorry for the delay, but we've had four deaths in the family since December 22nd.

I did say on the page we would be back by end of January, though, so here we are.  At least the basics.  Still things going on, so it will take me another 2-4 weeks to get things back in shape and looking a little more 'normal'.

Welcome back to the jungle...

Well, what do we think?  Are we going to get back into things here at TGC?

Reason I ask, is that the annual for the site will be due again first of December.  I think I brought this up last year about the same time, but I just got the invoice again for the next year - $195.00.

If we're going to try to keep the place going, I think I'm going to look at moving the site to a different host.  But with domain transfers and all the other crap, that's about a month long (or more) process.  If we think it's just dying out, then maybe it's time to let it die.

All up to you all, though.  Should we keep it going, but take the hit on the downtime to move it all?

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / This was fun...
« on: October 23, 2014, 11:01:12 PM »
Stupid, but fun.  Kinda cool to watch some new rookies just having fun in there.  Man I miss that...

Well, from the time I got online with EB, I hardly ever did any offline racing.  But last week I got the bug, so I put everything back together and raced a couple.

Couple nights later, I raced a few more.  Now I'm finding myself sitting down for 2-3-4 races about every other night.

It's not online, and no actual competition except against myself, but it's better than it had been without any racing at all.  Kind of.  I don't race many at a time, but it fills the 'no racing blues' hole.  A little.

Anybody else finding themselves getting it out for a few runs for old time's sake?  I mean hey - you can't always get what you want, but if ya try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need...

General Discussion / Possible Race Games for PC...
« on: May 31, 2014, 02:33:02 AM »
I've been looking at racers for the PC that have online multiplayer for some time now, and during our live chat tonight the suggestion was made that we start listing some of the possibilities we find.  Figured I'd start the list.

I did find one or two likely candidates in the last few weeks that looked good, till I saw the servers had been recently shut down.  Go figure.

Anyway, one possibility that I haven't tried yet - Drift City:

And another that has been mentioned before here - Trackmania Nations:

Anybody else?

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / New racers...
« on: January 31, 2014, 06:39:02 PM »
I thought it was interesting how many new people I saw in December.  I'm sure most of them just got the game as stocking stuffers, but it seemed like a lot of them were trying it out.  Usually happens around Christmas, but this is 4-5 years later and still happening.

But, there are some that seem 'newer' that are pretty good, too.  Could be a few old players with new profiles, but some of them don't really race like most of us.  But they're good.

I've been in now with ProMike (who goes under various names).  Not bad, and getting better.  There's a "Mell" that's pretty good, though it could be another one of ProMike's profiles (they have a few that start with "Pro").

Another named "Dennis" that I think is one of the above using a different name.  Runs fast but can score.

Raph doesn't seem like one of the vets, but can beat me most of the time now.  Could be a vet, though, they seem to be going for a ZLP.

Haven't seen Splintr in a while, but they were beating me regularly too.

I know there are some new ones out there getting pretty good, but can't say if the better ones are new and really good or just vets coming back under new names.

Haven't been on in a few days, but should be on by 10-11pm EST tonight to see if anybody is on.  Would be fun to get a few of the vets here in with some of those newer hotshots.  Rust and all...

General Discussion / Important! System change...
« on: December 07, 2013, 03:07:38 PM »
Renewal for TGC is up today, and I just found out they're increasing the price of my hosting to $292.00.

I'm not going to pay that, so I'm going to change web hosts.  That means the forums will be down for a couple days starting this evening.

It also means I won't be able to transfer post attachments to the new host, too many of them.  I've backed up the forums themselves and should be able to restore everything in the new host, but not the file and image attachments that go with them.

If you have any attachments you want saved from here, grab them this evening.  Sorry for the short notice.

Forums should be back up in a couple days.  Won't have time to answer any questions right now, going to be busy the rest of the day/night getting this ready...

What Ticked Me Off Today / Nothing new...
« on: August 08, 2013, 08:15:40 PM »
Just the same old EB multiplier complaint.

I decided to put some money on the account this week, and I've been amazed.  How, with six people in the room, can I get a 3X four times in a row?  And two of those the #2 player at less than half my points also gets a 3X.  And that's happened a ton of times this week.  And with 3-4 people I get a consistent 2X.

And how can you have a full room where everybody wins money every race?

And, it shouldn't be possible to run Br Kili, CN, or any Platinum track and get a 2X no matter how many people are in the room.  All that work for 2,500 bucks.

Some poor rookie that just barely makes it in loses his money, but the hard beeliner rookies that you eventually want to lose their money to teach them a lesson - don't.  Even from 6th place they make double.  Race, after race, after race.  Wouldn't happen to me.

The multipliers have never made much sense, but this week they've just been whacked.  And this getting booted constantly thing when you've bet on a race and have to finish just to save the money is getting annoying.  That's Nintendo's fault, not the game, but the multiplier thing is the game.

Anyway, nothing new, just a good day to rant about it.  Carry on...

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / 3 years later...
« on: July 25, 2013, 09:43:45 PM »
Well, it's been almost 3 years since the big "gotta keep the secrets" debate started on GFAQ.  Though new tricks/lines are still occasionally found, and everyone has come a long way in that time scoring wise, it's a good time to look back and see whether it "killed the game" letting all the 'secrets' loose on the general public.

It was almost 3 years ago that I said there was a big space between knowing and doing - I think I said something like "I've watched Tiger Woods play a hundred rounds of golf, but I still can't break par".

So, other than the top 10-20 constantly improving scores, and the very occasional new player getting relatively good fairly quickly, where are we now?  Thanks to Top and Flash 90% of the good stuff is out there for anybody and everybody to see, yet how many players are bringing in killer scores?

Those who were in the top 5 three years ago and still play are still there (or very close).  The next 10 change around a little, but not much.  And about 90% of the current players are still beeliners or low scorers.  Not counting the fact that new rookies come in every week, who of course still score poorly.

So, what's the general consensus, was the debate back then worth the time?

Forum and Site Information / Posting images...
« on: May 27, 2013, 07:22:47 AM »
Every once in a while I see someone having a problem uploading images.  Usually (not always) the problem is due to the upload timing out because the file size is so big.

Because of the high resolution of cameras now, image files are usually 3-5 megabytes, often up to 10 megabytes.  These are good quality images for printing, but not for posting.  Besides taking longer to upload, they also take longer to view - especially for people with a slower connection.

Resizing images before posting (or emailing) is always a good idea.  It makes for faster (and easier) uploads, much faster viewing, and saves everybody's bandwidth.  Most images that are posted in a forum like this don't need to be over 720x480 pixels, or at most for more detail 1024x768 pixels.

Almost any image or graphics program can resize images, but the one I use the most for really quick resizing is IrfanView:

You can use it to resize a 4 megabyte image from a camera down to a 720x480 image with a size of around 60-100 kilobytes without any noticeable loss in quality for quick posting and emails.  That would make it about 40 times faster to upload or view.

Resizing an image takes about 5 seconds, but will save you a lot of upload time and everyone who views it a lot of download time.  And, if you're getting errors uploading sometimes, it will eliminate most of those errors...

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / Enough!
« on: May 20, 2013, 10:47:14 PM »
Well, it's official.  I'm no longer having fun on the tracks.

I'm sure it doesn't make sense to most, but I really don't care about the wins/losses, I just have fun in there.  Or I did.

In the last 3 nights I've just dropped the remote on the coffee table mid-race at least a dozen times.  Whatever the cause, strange things are happening.

Just not fun anymore...  :'(

PC Games Discussion / Anybody wanna FPS?

Was doing some work stuff this morning, looked up something on the net, hit a game site by accident.

And found this:

Downloaded it, installed it, dropped into an online game in progress without meaning to, and won the round.  Somehow.

Seems to be a fun one, and there are plenty of servers going.  And we can make our own.  Just a little 400+mb download and you're good to go.

Well, our internet went down for a little while again this afternoon and I had a few minutes to do something different, so I got Doom 3 out of the closet and installed it.  Had forgotten how good that game was.  Totally surprised it ran on Win 7 Ultimate, but it works great.

Time will be spent going through that one again...  ;)

General Discussion / Free game servers...
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:15:27 PM »
Has anybody here ever tried any of the free game servers, like AeriaGames, Play4Free, Gamerage, etc?

They have some good looking multiplayer games, including FPS.  You can play for free, but they make their money by selling in game crap.  Seems it would be another one of those things where the people who spend the money would have the biggest weapons, best armor, and most stuff.  Don't know that for sure.

Anybody tried any of them?

General Discussion / The new voice chat...

The new voice chat system has now been tested and implemented.  Agent C just told me that SkoolYa was nice enough to write up a tutorial for getting set up with it and will be posting it soon (in this thread, I think).

In the meantime, I thought I'd list the channels I've created and that are currently available.  Search for them, then add to your 'Favorites' in the VC program.

"The Game Community"  --- main channel

"ExciteBots Channel 1"  ---
"ExciteBots Channel 2"  ---        ---  sub-channels for tournaments or anything else
"ExciteBots Channel 3"  ---

"Wario Fart"  --- sub-channel for (you guess)  :P

"GoldenEye"  --- sub-channel for (and guess again)  :P

Anything else that's not in SkoolYa's documentation will be posted here as needed...

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / Bars, planes, trains, and automobiles...
« on: December 28, 2012, 07:03:40 PM »
Haven't said much about this because in the grand scheme of things I don't have a side to the argument one way or the other, but Cube asked.

To start with, I don't care how anybody runs, it's always their choice.  That includes whether they want to farm, farm/run, beeline, or hack/cheat.  One nice thing about EB is that it's just another video game, and nobody forces me to play or stay in a particular room.  I do it for fun, and when it's not fun I change rooms or go back to work.

But back to topic and my thoughts on the whole 'skipping' thing, and all this is just MHO.

The ability to skip bars, like some other things that are possible in EB, is an unintended flaw in the game programming.  Just like the ability to penetrate barrier walls in some places without a hack, and a few other things I've found.  Similar to the clipping thing you see sometimes when you crash or hit an odd spot, which is caused by texture join errors.

I play the game for fun, and to attempt a certain amount of skill because it's part of the game.  Part of the enjoyment of playing a game for me is to play it within the limits of the intention of the game as it was developed, and to try to excel at the game within those limitations.  That's true whether it's a video game, board game, card game, sport, or whatever.

I let people play the way they like, but for my part if I see I'm in a room with a hacker I leave the room or just don't race (except when I'm playing around with them, which happens once in a while).  If I see I'm in a room with someone skipping bars I do the same.  I don't get upset, I just let them race the way they want and move on.  Shortcuts are part of the game, but I feel the big shortcut after the bar on Br Scot was one that slipped by the programmers, so that's another one I'll usually just sit out when I see it.  I don't consider it cheating, just another game anomaly I don't take advantage of.

As to losing a ZLP - it's been known for a long time there are hacks and hackers, beeliners, and now skippers.  Anyone going for a ZLP knowing that and betting is like walking through a dark alley in Chicago with a pocket full of cash, you have to know you're taking a chance and that bad things can happen.  And when they do, somebody is going to tell you that you should have 'known better'.  It's hard to blame the mugger when you knew the chances going into the alley.

That being said, I'm always a little concerned about things being said like "I wouldn't have DQ'ed you if I'd known it was you".  That's a little like the mugger saying "I wouldn't have robbed you if I'd known you were Ted's cousin".

There are people here who have the will and fortitude to outfarm me most of the time, and those who can beeline faster than me, and that's perfectly okay with me.  Someone is always better at something.  As long as the game is being played as intended I have a good time in there.  And when it's not, I have the option not to race.  I drink my coffee, or just play around.

I also make it a point not to hammer rookies whenever possible and just show a little sportsmanship, but that's just me.  I try to wean them into the game to keep the game going.  Unless of course they're unlucky enough to get into a room of better racers that are racing hard, then they have to learn hard lessons.

So, for anyone who didn't feel like reading all the above - I race the game as intended (according to my idea of what was intended) even on tracks I don't like, and simply opt out when in a room with anyone hacking, skipping, or using the shortcut on Br Scot.  I don't make any claims of 'rules' to the game, I just race my way.

As a last thought, I remember when looping was considered to be cheating when going for scores, when looping is probably more a part of the gameplay than any of these other things.  And just to get in one more metaphor - Remember, at one time steroid use in sports wasn't technically illegal, either, but it didn't make it right or fair.

So there ya go, Cube, just one guy's thoughts on the current topic du jour... ;)

General Discussion / Kicks and grins...
« on: November 09, 2012, 06:15:51 AM »
Okay, some of you noticed me having some fun the last day or two.  It's an old game I brought back out for a few chuckles.

Back when this place was for game developers a few years ago, I got bored one night and decided to play a little joke.  Over time it turned into a weekly challenge.  Here's how it works:

I start it off by having the system replace a given word with some other word.  The first person to guess what the original word was that I replaced gets to choose a new word to be replaced, and it's replacement.  The first person to guess what that original word was gets to go next.  And so on.  Just once a week, and on an arbitrary day.

The rules are:

- The replacement can't be profane or offensive.

- The replacement has to be kept to 1-3 words.

- I get to decide whether the replacement is acceptable.

- Answers to the riddle are to be posted here, first correct answer wins.

Other than that, the key to the fun is to come up with an original word that is used relatively often, or no one will ever even see it, but it shouldn't be anything that's too noticeable or obvious.  Should be challenging without being impossible.  And the replacement should be amusing in context.

There's an active one right now - so go...

And Then There's Music / The return of RatRod...

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / Tracks from the dark side...
« on: October 09, 2012, 04:44:43 PM »
What's your worst track - period?

I have my problem tracks, like Sil Mex and Sil Fin, but my one and only 'dark side' track is Gold Mex.  Absolutely nothing I can do there.  Even offline using the full clock time I can't do anything.  It's like the track just laughs at me and says "I don't think so!".

We've had lists of best and worst tracks, but what's your absolute worst nemesis track?

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / Achilles' heel...
« on: October 09, 2012, 04:40:13 PM »
So, what's everybody else's Achilles' heel?  Everybody knows about my usual red bar issues that has often cost me races by killing placement, but my biggest problem on the tracks is definitely the walker.

On Gold Fiji it keeps me down to a 450-475 base most of the time because I can't do the tree run, and there are quite a few other tracks/places where it does me in.  I can't make it go straight, and I can't make it 'run'.  It's my single biggest flaw in EB, and sometimes it's a really big one.

Anybody else got one?

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / Rookie magnet?
« on: October 09, 2012, 04:35:10 PM »
So, I've been wondering for a long time now.  Is it just me, or does anyone else seem to attract rookie crashes/kills all the freakin' time?

I'm sure a big part of it is that, normally, I tend to run on the regular parts of the tracks more than the vets do, so a certain amount of interaction is going to happen.  But still, I seem to get killed more often, and knocked off lines and combos, than I ever used to.  Mostly when I'm running a vet or two and there are rookies in the room, doesn't happen as much with just rookies - but I guess I run differently then.

Some races, though, when there's a vet in the room and I do actually try, it's like "Seriously?".  With only vets it doesn't happen as often either, but it's a pretty regular thing with the rookies.  Wrong place, wrong time I guess.

Anybody else find this, or is it just me - again?
