Offline / A funny thing
« on: April 03, 2017, 06:02:06 AM »
You know, given this is a racing game, it's kind of funny how neglected the speed records tend to be.  I mean, TopStar and Aaron were about the only ones who worked at the beelining records, and only TopStar seems to care about the Fastest S-Rank times.

But I've been playing Excitebots off and on again recently, and honestly, I just can't bring myself to care about score records anymore.  Maybe I've just been watching too many speed runs of other games on YouTube, but the idea of speed-running Excitebots actually has much more appeal to me now.  So yeah, I've started working on my fastest S-Rank times and enjoy just running through all the courses (in order) as quickly as possible while still getting S-Ranks.

I think part of the appeal for me is this allows me to try different paths through courses than what I would normally take if I was just farming, plus, you're more focused on gathering Stars quickly and efficiently, removing any excess stars so that you only get exactly what you need.

Game Reviews / Neon Drive - First impressions/Quick Review
« on: March 04, 2017, 04:49:58 AM »
So, I've been looking around on Steam lately for racing/driving games.  Mostly seem to find driving simulators more focused on "reality" than fun, but I came across a cool looking game called "Neon Drive" for $10 and decided what the heck, I'll give it a shot.

Visuals:
This game is gorgeous, IMO.  It's rockin' a classic 80's neon vibe that's just spot on.  The game is fast and fluid and has a great aesthetic.

Sound/Music:
So, this game is more of a Rhythm game than a Racing game (more on that in a bit).  As such, you'll be listening to some rockin' music.  I personally found the music great and it definitely jives well with the 80's theme of the game.

Gameplay:
So, as I mentioned, this is really more of a Rhythm game than a racing game.  Your car will be on a 4-track road, and you move between tracks with the arrow keys.  As you drive along, obstacles with come up in your path and you'll need to navigate around them.  You'll find that your movement coincides with the music, and in fact, the key to the game is using the musical cues to help you know when to move.

This game is tough... and I mean TOUGH!  You'll die... A LOT.  But it never feels unfair.  When you mess up, you'll know it was because your reaction was off by just a little bit, or you moved left when you should have went right... or you meant to go 2 to the right but you fat-fingered it and went 3 instead.  But, each level does have some checkpoints so you won't get set back TOO far and you can just keep trying and trying until you get it right.  This game is all about memorization and moving to the music.  You'll have to practice each course a lot before you can truly master it.  I've only just begun, and I did (barely) manage to beat the course on "normal" (e.g easy) difficulty, but after that, there's a Hard and Insane difficulty to work on as well where you and the music move even faster and your reflexes are pushed to their limit.

Overall:
In the end, I'd have to give this game a rating of:
Van Halen/VHS Tapes  :o :P

This game is pretty cool and fun, and for $10, not a bad deal.  It's a bit short, but the extra difficulties allow for more replayability.

PC Games Discussion / Well, I finally did it...
« on: January 15, 2017, 08:36:52 PM »
I'd been wanting to do it for some time, but I finally plunked down the money for a new computer: i7 processor, Nvidia 1080 graphics card, 16 GB of ram, SSD hard drive.  It wasn't cheap, but it never was going to be.  If you want something this beefy, you gotta plunk down the money.

The funny thing is, when I went in, my original intention was to buy a new motherboard/processor/ram/graphics card and build it myself.  However, after talking with one of the guys at the store, who's specialty was building PCs, he informed me that, unless I REALLY wanted the "experience" of building my own PC, it would actually be cheaper to buy a pre-built one.  So I did.

So I was finally able to get Doom working and holy crap, it's amazing.  Only played the first level so far, but man, does it kick ass!

Penny Arcade / 2048
« on: November 01, 2016, 04:17:47 AM »
So there's this little game called 2048 that I'm a little bit addicted too.  It's one of those games that's easy to pick up and learn, but difficult to master.  The goal is simple: Keep combining like numbers together to double them with the eventual goal of getting up to 2048.  Now, while that will seem challenging at first (took me a while to get my first 2048), after a while, it'll almost seem like child's play.  The good new?  You can keep going!

I've been at it for some time and have gotten pretty good.  The highest tile I've ever achieved is 8192... and I've done it a few times now.  I'm slowly closing in on 16384, but at that level, there's ZERO room for error and one bad move and it's game over.  The closest I've ever gotten was getting a 8192, 4096, and 2048, plus some other change, but made a small mistake and, like I said, it was game over.  I feel like if I ever do get 16384, it may be time to hang it up, because going for a 32768 is just silly.

Anyways, not sure if you could get it in the Penny Arcade or not, but it might be a fun addition.

PC Games Discussion / Doom and Overwatch
« on: June 09, 2016, 03:47:32 AM »
So, there's been a couple big PC releases recently that have been getting a lot of attention and have me genuinely intrigued.

The first is Doom.  While things initially looked sketchy in the way they handled the pre-release, it's actually been getting a lot of great reviews.  The things I've been seeing is that the single-player is probably one of the best single-player FPSs to come out in a long time.  It's fast, fluid, and everything that Doom 3 wasn't, and what a Doom game SHOULD be.  It's also quite long and will take you some time to finish.  I mean, even Yahtzee like it, and he can find things to nit-pick about even some of the best games.

Then there's Overwatch, which, if you haven't heard about this game yet, I'm going to assume you've been living under a rock and don't know what the internet is.  How did you even get here?  Anyways, it also looks like a lot of fun.  It's a multiplayer only FPS, but it's been doing a lot of things right.  It has 21 different classes to play, but they all have their role to play in certain situations.  You can change which class you're playing on the fly, so you're never chained to your choice.  Also, a big thing that's really making me interested is the fact that you don't have to "level up" to get all your abilities.  You get all your abilities from the start and will always be on a level playing ground.  The only deciding factor is your skill, which I think is something we all agree is a good thing (remember that game called... I think it was "Excite-butts" or something... that was skill based and I think the general consensus here was that it was pretty alright).  Tangents aside, it might be a fun game to group up and play, if anyone here would be into that sort of thing.  It's bright and colorful and cheerful and just looks fun.

Anyways, those are the games I'm currently looking into.  Anyone have any experience with either of these and want to chime in?

PC Games Discussion / Toxikk
« on: February 11, 2015, 07:22:45 AM »
So, many of you have probably been hearing Joom and I talk about this game, so I thought I'd make an "official" thread for discussion.  For those of you unaware, here is a link to the website.  There's a lot of good information and videos there, so head on over and take a look.  I'll wait...

OK, now that you're mostly up to speed on what it actually is, I'll give a little more information.  Currently, the game is in beta and is a bit rough, but still fun.  They're working on a lot of things and making changes regularly.  Initially, the weapon balance was pretty wack (the Cerberus, the rocket launcher, was super OP), but they've made a few changes and tweaks to help balance things out, although they're still working on it in general.  Also, there's only one map available, but they're planning on releasing a new map within the week, and it's going to be a larger sized one, so I'm looking forward to that.

Now, I'll understand if some of you are hesitant to jump in on an unfinished game.  However, I think Joom was right: Getting in on the ground floor is the way to go.  Being able to learn the game alongside everyone else is very helpful and much more fun as opposed to trying to jump in in 2-3 years time when everyone will just own you while you're trying to learn.  It'd be like those who got into Excitebots 2-3 years late: they had a long, uphill battle to become even remotely competitive with the best players.

However, if you think you'll wait until the full release, I'll understand.  The game is a bit rough right now, and essentially being a beta tester can be a bit trying at times.  But on the other hand, you can let your voice be heard, and the developers DO actually listen.  It's refreshing to see the devs on the boards, responding to posters.  And even more refreshing: when they release updates, the changes they make correlate to what people are talking/complaining about.  As mentioned, when they first released the beta, everyone and their mother was complaining about how OP the rocket launcher was, and, within almost a week, they released and update with numerous fixes, but chief among them (particularly gameplay-wise) were changes to the rocket launcher which was a clear step in the right direction.

So why not jump in and give it a shot?  It's a lot of fun! :D

Oh, and Joom: This Saturday Night: You + Me = Shooting.  Capiche? ;D :P

General Discussion / Getting close to my 9's... IN REAL LIFE!!!
« on: November 23, 2014, 07:16:53 PM »
So, I've know my car was getting close for some time now.  However, this weekend I took a pretty long trip (about 320 miles each way) with the knowledge that, when I got back, I'd be VEERRRYY close, and boy was I!!

Let's get a close up of that to be sure!! :o :o :o

That's right, folks, only 33 miles to go!!  I'll probably do that by the end of the week just driving back and forth to work.  So, in the spirit if TopStar's silly poll when he was close to his 9,999th win, I've created a poll, too, because WHY THE HECK NOT!!  We need more silliness around here (I spent the weekend with my two VERY silly neices, so now I need to share what I've learned)! :P :P :P

Wii U / Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Anybody else getting pretty hyped about this game?  I know I am!!

There's a been a lot of videos and press released about the game, but I think this one helps showcase a lot of the cool things.  It's long, but definitely worth watching:

Also, I recently bought myself a 3DS, and although I don't have the SSB for it yet, I plan on getting it soon.  If anybody else here gets this game and wants to try some match-ups, post here and we'll see what we can put together.

General Discussion / Another BTC...
« on: October 12, 2014, 08:08:37 AM »
So tonight I was playing SWTOR, and I was using "Group Finder" which pairs with you other (random) people for doing Flashpoints (missions which generally require 4 people to complete).  I do this regularly and don't always pay attention to everybody's names.  Such was the case tonight, as it was an easier one that I've done several times and I was just blasting through it for the rewards.  However, near the end, I was noticed the healer's name, which shows up every time they heal you, seemed vaguely familiar... "beeteecee".  So I asked them if it meant BTC, as in "Battle Tanx Commander," and they confirmed that it did!  At this point, I'm getting a little annoyed.  You mean to tell me BTC's been play SWTOR this whole time but never told me?!?  So then I asked them if they had ever played Excitebots, to which they asked, "What is that?  I don't even know what that is..."

So, here I was, with another player that goes by BTC, and it wasn't MY BTC.  I was a little sad.  Why can't MY BTC come and play SWTOR with me and run Flashpoints, Ops, etc...  We could really tear it up, especially if we got a few others involved.

Anyways, here's the proof:

Sadly, I did not ask them if they had an affinity for lobsters, as it only occurred to me while I was writing this. :( 8) :P

Offline / Excitebots Offline Achievement Challenge

Excitebots Offline Achievement Challenge

Introduction:
Since the shutdown of Nintendo's Wii servers, this place has been feeling pretty sad, lonely, and deserted.  For most, offline doesn't hold much appeal as it isn't all that much fun to beat the computer and the hunt for high scores has lost it's luster.  Of course, we still have these these and will update them should somebody bother to set a new record, but honestly, is anybody even trying?

What we need is something new.  Something different.  Something that will make us want to plug in our Wii, pop in our Excitebots disc, and play again.  And I think I may have the answer.  I've had the basic idea for this for a while now, and after playing around with it tonight, I think I've ironed out how I want to do this.  It's actually fairly similar to an idea TopStar had a long time ago that unfortunately didn't last very long because, at the time, people were more interested in playing online.

So the idea is fairly simple: Each week, I'll post a new challenge of some sort (I've got a lot of ideas for different challenges).  You'll then have a week to complete it and post your results.  After this, the challenge will be over and no new results will be accepted.  Challenges may be re-posted in the future, at which point, newcomers/people who missed it will be given a chance, and those who already completed it will have a chance to improve their score.  All of this, of course, will be based on the honor system, since it's all for fun and cheating/lying would be rather pointless.

General Rules:
  • Unless otherwise stated, all challenges are to be completed in Super Excite mode.
  • Unless otherwise stated, when racing a given course, you must place 1st and achieve an S-Rank score.  There will be penalties for failing to achieve these, which will be given on a per-challenge basis.
  • Unless otherwise stated, you are only allowed ONE restart per course.  This means no repeating the course over and over again until you achieve a "perfect" score.  No,  there are no "practice runs," "Just foolin' arounds," or any other such malarkey.  It starts from the moment you read the challenge.  The idea is to make this more performance-based, like an Excitebowl, and not repetition-based, like the high-score records.  There will be penalties for this as well.
  • Unless otherwise stated, no looping/backtracking/repeating is allowed.  This includes courses which reset you to a previous point if you crash (such as the tree run in G. Tasmania).
  • No posting hints, lists of courses, or other "helpful" information pertaining to the current or past challenges.  I will provide exactly as much information as I see fit, and the rest is up to each individual racer.  The idea is to test not only your skills, but your knowledge of the courses.  Failure to comply with this rule will result in a) your post being edited or deleted, b) a sternly worded message from yours truly, and c) potential barring from challenges for a given time period.
  • Scores must be posted by 11:59 PM Central Time of the final day.  Scores posted after this will not be included, and you will have to until the next time the challenge is posted.
  • Scores must be achieved during the week of the challenge.  If you miss a challenge, you cannot "save up" your score and then post it the next time the challenge is up.

Current Challenge(s):

Name: Bowling Bonanza
Dates: 08/02/2014 - 08/23/2014
Description: Race through each course (which contains bowling pins) knocking down as many pins as possible.  For each course, record your total number of pins knocked over (this is displayed in the star summary after the race is over).  When you're finished, tally up all your scores from each course: this is your final score.
Special Rules: None.
Penalties:
- Failure to Achieve 1st: Subtract 2 pins per rank below 1st from your course score (e.g. if you were 2nd, subtract 2; if you were 3rd, subtract 4; etc.).
- Failure to Achieve S-Rank: Subtract 5 pins from your course score.
- Restart Penalty: Subtract 2 pins for each additional restart beyond your allowed first restart.
Hint(s):
- As near as I can tell, the maximum achievable score is 250.

Name: Ringleader
Dates: 08/17/2014 - 08/30/2014
Description: Race through each course, jumping through as many rings as possible.  For each course which has rings, record your total number of rings jumped through (this is displayed in the star summary after the race is over).  When you're finished, tally up all your scores from each course: this is your final score.
Special Rules: None.
Penalties:
- Failure to Achieve 1st: Subtract 2 rings per rank below 1st from your course score (e.g. if you were 2nd, subtract 2; if you were 3rd, subtract 4; etc.).
- Failure to Achieve S-Rank: Subtract 5 pins from your course score.
- Restart Penalty: Subtract 2 pins for each additional restart beyond your allowed first restart.
Hint(s):
- As near as I can tell, the maximum achievable score is 317, which seems odd...
- Some courses may contain more than one set of rings.

And Then There's Music / Zerg and a Shotgun
« on: June 15, 2014, 08:12:48 PM »
Recently picked up StarCraft 2 for a good price, really been meaning to pick it up for a long time now.

Anyways, in the game, in between missions, you go to a cantina, where there's a jukebox, which plays various songs.  However, when I was clicking through, "Zerg and a Shotgun" caught my attention, and I gave it a listen.  Was far better than I thought it would be.  I normally despise all country music with a passion, but this... this I like... A LOT!

General Discussion / E3 2014
« on: June 11, 2014, 05:08:11 AM »
So, I actually got up early today in order to watch Nintendo's presentation, and I have to say that, overall, I was pretty impressed!  I'll go over my thoughts on each of the games they showed:

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS - No surprise to me that they started off with this.  They introduced a few new characters, but overall not much else.  Kinda thought we'd get some concrete release dates, but we didn't.  Oh well, the people who are interested in this already know they're getting it, as will I.

amiibos - Technically not a game, but figures you'll be able to buy similar to Skylanders and Disney Infinity.  They'll be compatible with Super Smash Bros. and also other future games as well.  Personally, I'm probably going to get these because a) they look really cool and b) I like the concept of leveling up and customizing your characters in Smash.  I can see how some might see this as a blatent cash grab, but I'd disagree because they're completely optional (you can still play with all the characters without them) and seem to be really nicely designed.  Plus, imagine some future Excitebots game where you can buy mini-bot figures which will allow you to customize their stats, upgrade them, etc...  I would be SO into that it would be ridiculous!

Zelda (for Wii U) - WOW!!  Did not expect the Open-World announcement, but I think it's the right direction for the series.  In many ways, as they discussed, they're going back to the roots of the game, which is a good thing.  Oh, and it doesn't look bad, either! :o

Hyrule Warriors - Very interesting concept here.  Basically they're taking the Dynasty Warriors series and inserting Zelda characters.  I looks pretty cool and it might be fun.  I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game before, but I'd definitely be willing to give this a chance.

Yoshi's Wooly World/Kirby and the Rainbow Cruise - Both are very cutesy, fun looking platformers that I think will be fun.  I'll be keeping an eye on these.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - Basically, a 3D Mario game where you play as Toad instead.  Could be interesting.  I'll probably check it out in time.

Mario Maker - FINALLY!!! I've been wanting this for years now!  We finally get an official Mario level creator and I'm super stoked about it!

Splatoon - To me this was the most surprising and interesting game Nintendo announced.  Check out this trailer:

Basically, it's a shooter, with a twist, and is meant to be family friendly.  I really dig the style of this and I think this could become "our new game."  It's multiplayer based and puts an interesting twist on an old but tried-n-true formula, just like a certain game we used to enjoy.

Xenoblade Chronicles X - Never been that big into JRPGs, but there are many who are, and it never hurts to have a more diverse set of games for the system, and from what I hear, this looks like a good game.

Bayonetta 2 - Looks like a pretty cool game, actually.  Never played the original but guess what?  It comes free on the disc as well, so now I'll be able to play it.

Anyways, those were my thoughts, what did you guys think?

« on: June 02, 2014, 02:18:58 AM »
Figured I'd set this up since a few of us now have Wii Us so that we can all friend each other.  The good news is that the friend system on the Wii U is much simpler (and better) than the Wii.  Instead of needing to exchange friend codes for each game that we own, we can just friend each other once and it will work for all current and future games.  Tom (dynamO) and I have already done this, and it's a pretty simple process.  You no longer need to enter in long lines of digits, just look up their name and send them a request.  Since the system does not allow duplicate names, only one person will have the name you're looking up, and therefore you'll know you're friending the right person.  So, all that's left to do is create this list so we can friend each other:

TGC NameWii U Name
dynamOTomTony
theJudeAbidestheJude
propaneBit_8gent

Obviously, not much yet, but I hear both TopStar and BTC own Wii Us now, so if they could post their info, that would be great.

Quick Edit: Found propane's Wii U friend name in another topic!

The Wi-Fi Grand Finale Weekend

So here we are, at the end of the line.  Next weekend is the last weekend we'll be able to race before the shutdown.  So let's make it a weekend to remember!

I plan on playing as much Excitebots, Goldeneye, Mario Kart, and maybe even Super Smash Bros. as I can.  I will be in C3 while I'm playing, and I'd like to invite anybody and everybody to join me.

Dates: May 16-18, 2014
Times: All Day Long, and into the Night as well! :D
Games: Anything with Wi-Fi connectivity that I own, most notably Excitebots, Mario Kart, Goldeneye, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Come one, come all, to join together for one final celebration of the Wii's online connectivity and all the awesome games that used it!

Please note: I took off time for this!  While all my fellow suckers coworkers will be working Friday through Sunday (this has already been confirmed), I'll be here racing and playing.  I took this weekend off months ago when I first found out about the shutdown.  I'm glad I did! 8)

What Ticked Me Off Today / Why my life sucks right now...

So yeah, this happened.

I realize that probably looks like gobbledygook to some of you, but long story short: Two lots of product were incorrectly labled - basically their labels were switched around.

Why do I care?  Because that's the line I work on.  That's the product I help make.  Now, the error that resulted in this was made on first shift, while I work on second shift, but that matters not to literally everybody else in the company not on 2nd-shift Evercross.  So yeah, they've been coming down on us... hard.  All new measures and rules designed to prevent this from happening again, but in reality, all it does is make things take longer and be a giant pain in everybodys' asses.  But oh, nevermind all that, because we're still expected to produce the same amount of product we were before, even though things take longer now.

I won't bore you with further details, but yeah, it really just means more overtime forevermore.

Wii U / Well, I finally pulled the trigger...
« on: April 10, 2014, 07:26:50 AM »
... and bought a Wii U.

Call it the perfect storm of great sales and a nice helping of those generic giftcards (visa and mastercard) which I recieved from work.

So, as I've stated numerous times, I work a lot at my new job.  And while this is exhausting and frustrating at times, it's not without it's perks.  Perks like $25 and $50 giftcards.  They give them away for performance, training, or just as giveaways at company events.  I've gotten several since I started working there and have been saving them, and recently got up to $250 in giftcards and was contemplating how to spend them (the Wii U was on the list, but so were a lot of other things including a 3DS).

But then, Target, my old workplace was like, "I know, let's have not one, but TWO really great sales pertaining to the Wii U!!"  First, we'll give you a $50 Target giftcard if you buy one of the New Super Mario Bros Wii U bundles.  Next, we'll have a generic sale on all videogames (including Wii U ones) where if you buy 2 games, you can get a 3rd one free.  "Well, OK then," I replied.

So I gathered my giftcards, strode into Target, found an electronics Team Member and said, "Come hither, son."  I pointed at 3 games, which he took out for me, and then I hefted one of the Wii Us up and we went to the checkout.  "We'll be doing this in TWO transactions," I said.  He nodded in confirmation.

He rang up the Wii U, and I started with the giftcards.  When they were done, I only had $65 left to pay, which I did with Redcard.  He handed my my $50 Target gifcard.

Then, he rang up the 3 games, with the 3rd one automatically being deducted as free.  I gave him my employee discount card to scan (sadly, I can't use it when paying with the generic giftcards), then handed him back the $50 giftcard.  After all that, the remainder was around $62, which I paid with my Redcard.

He bagged up everything in a large leftover Christmas bag and handed it to me.  I smiled, thanked him, and walked out the door.

For $127 out of pocket, I had just purchased a Wii U with New Super Mario Bros. Wii U & New Super Luigi Wii U bundled, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze, and Pikmin 3.

I felt good.  Call me a traitor if you must, but you can't deny that that wasn't a hell of a deal!  :o ;D :o

.... and Mario Kart 8 comes out at the end of May. 8)

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / We are the April Fools.
« on: April 01, 2014, 07:33:16 AM »
Well, another year has come and gone, and it seems it's that time of the year again.  What will I make up this year?  A new Excitebots game?  I doubt you'd believe me even if it was real.  An announcement that they are not, in fact, canceling Wi-Fi after all?  That just seems cruel, even for me.  Honestly, I just don't have the heart to pull even a good-natured prank on you this year.  I doubt any of us does.

For you see, we're ALL the April Fools.  For it was in April that that Monster Games released Excitebots: Trick Racing.  A mere one week before Nintendo unleashed the juggernaut that is/was Mario Kart Wii.  What fools, what utter mad men would release another racing game anywhere near a Mario Kart release?  Fools, or geniuses?  Despite all odds, this game struggled against the yoke and made a name among the great racing games of the Wii, but it wasn't easy.  It received no marketing support from Nintendo and suffered from bad cover art that made many dismiss it as mere shovelware.  But it persevered.

And out of obscurity it came, not with a bang but a whisper, like the soft breeze ruffling through a forest, it came.  A few picked it up, and then some more.  It's fan base slowly coalesced over the internet.

So there we were, a scruffy group of individuals who dared to think there might be a better racing game on the Wii than Mario Kart.  The labeled us fools, idiots... drunkards.  Maybe we are, but we knew in our hearts that we were right.  And so we raced and smashed and scored and won, lost, and tied.  We chatted and played and had a hell of a good time.  We made memories that will never leave us.

And like fools, we didn't think it would end.  We knew that it had to at some point, but we saw that as something in the distance.  Yet here we are, staring it down, doing our best to maintain our composure.  If this is to be the end, so be it.  It's been a wild ride, and we have no regrets.

Happy April Fools Day, The Game Community.

And because it's not really April Fools Day without my good friend Rick Astley, I feel I must share this.  It's a variation I found a while back that I find quite amusing, and have been saving it for today.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

ExciteBots: Trick Racing / I think this guy just gave us a shout-out.
« on: January 31, 2014, 05:39:21 AM »
Happened upon this series on youtube from the Wii forums at gamefaqs, and started grumbling, "They'd better include Excitebots! >:("  Well, they did, although it took them until the third video to do so.  However, once they did, they did it in style:

(Skip to 1:46 for start of the bit about Excitebots.)

"... and has a very active multiplayer community.  Even as of recording this, people are on playing right now..."  :o :D 8)

It's definitely worth checking out the first two videos in this series as well (as well as watching this entire video).  While I haven't played all the games he's listed, I've played a decent amount of them, and agree that they're great little hidden gems worth playing.

Putting those Excitebots skills to good use, I see.  Almost had a single axel turn there as well. :D :P

According to the description, this happened in Michigan: Upper Peninsula, and I know of only one person who lives in that area with those kinds of driving skills. ;)

PC Games Discussion / Things that steer me away from Excitebots...

So many of you have been hearing me talking about SWTOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic) in the Shout Box or in C3.  It's an MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe and is generally well made.  As a large Star Wars nerd, it really sucked me in, as each of the classes have really good (and unique) story-lines.  However, then they came out with this last week:

Son.  Of.  A.  Beech.  Despite there only being one game mode with only 2 maps (although I'm sure they'll keep adding more with time), I'm already head-over-heels for this mode, and mind you, this is coming from someone who had previously paid little to no attention to PvP (which this is, exclusively).  I loved Rogue Squadron back on the N64 and later Rogue Squadron II on the Gamecube, but there wasn't any good Star Wars flight games this generation to draw my attention.  I hadn't realized how badly I was jonesing for it until this came along with all it's awesomeness.  What's cool, too, is that it has a hint of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter in it as well.  Although not as in-depth as that game, it's certainly more in-depth that the Rogue Squadron (which were great but greatly simplified in their controls).  I think this actually strikes a nice balance between the overly-simplistic Rogue-Squadron and the overly anal-retentive XvT.  Plus, there's the upgrade options which allow you to modify your ships with different weapons and companions.

Now, you may think this gives the vets and advantage over the noobies, and perhaps slightly, but it really just gives them more options.  And even if you suck and don't get any kills and do very little damage, you'll still get upgrade points to spend, so you'll eventually unlock.  If I had to give one complaint about the game, it'd be this: I don't think the tutorial provided does a proper job teaching you the basics of the game.  I actually had to go back through it a couple times before I figured out how to properly aim at and hit other ships.  The thing is, it pops up some text which seems a bit confusing, so you whiz right through it to get to the actual piloting/shooting.  Except all it gives you to shoot are stationary drones.  No moving objects whatsoever.  Now, I'm not asking highly intelligent bots here, but just some basic ones to teach you to aim in the proper spot (It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize I wasn't supposed aim AT the ship, but at the little circle it projects in front of it when you're locked on... this WASN'T explained except in a quick blurb in the text).  Anyways, once you learn how to properly aim and use your weapons, dodge and evade, and the pros and cons of each ship type, it's a blast. :D ;D 8)

And it's taking up more and more of my Excitebots time... :( :'( :(

OK, I was introduced to Gizoogle very recently, and I have to say, it is straight-dope hilarious.  I could try to explain it, but it'll be easier if you just click on the following link:

Tears literally came out of my eyes, I was laughing so hard.  Who KNEW Joom was such a trick-ass balla?  A word of warning to the young 'uns and squeamish: There be profanity all up in this.

Member Blogs / Why I've been away...
« on: August 16, 2013, 05:28:09 AM »
Been meaning to post this for a while, so here it is:

I got a new job.  It started back at the beginning of July.  Pays a little better, and the hours are more steady (there's even overtime).  I work 10 hour days from Mon-Thurs, and sometimes Friday and Saturday too (although I've only worked 1 saturday).  Doing overtime tomorrow (Friday) as well as next Friday too.  Additionally, I didn't fully quit my previous job, but cut back to one day a week: Sunday.  At the new job, I work evenings and don't get home until at least 2 AM.

As you can probably tell, this doesn't leave a whole lot of free time, especially when you consider that my days off are generally spent catching up on chores like laundry, dishes and grocery shopping.  So not a lot of time for videogames, Excitebots included.  However, I still try to get on every now and again, especially if I have a Friday off and people are FWALing.

Anyways, hope you don't think I've abandoned you guys again... just busy.  Hopefully I'll see you on the tracks soon.
