Game Series: Nintendo Racing - Mario Kart
« Reply #1 on: February 16, 2013, 12:03:26 AM »
Mario Kart

Introduced in 1992, the Mario Kart series is by far the most well-known and best-loved racing series made by Nintendo.  It has become synonymous with kart racing in general and has come to define this sub-genre of racing games.  The main draw of the game has always been the "race with weapons" formula where you must both drive well and use the weapons at your disposal to secure 1st place.  The series continues to recieve sequel after sequel, and it's only a matter of time before another game is released.

Game Series: Nintendo Racing - F-Zero

F-Zero

Introduced in 1991, the F-Zero series is best known for it's intensely fast races across twisting tracks.  The games are given a futuristic setting where the tracks float in and around cities across different planets.  It is also known for it's car to car combat, as racers can bang their opponents off the track to gain an advantage, but must be careful not to be thrown themselves.

Game Series: Nintendo Racing - Excite Racing
« Reply #3 on: February 16, 2013, 05:45:09 PM »
Excite Racing

Introduced in 1985, the Excite series is actually the first racing series introduced by Nintendo, although it would take some time for them to make it one.  The focus of the series has always been on offroad racing involving rugged terrain.  This has led to a focus on both catching air and landing correctly to keep your speed.  Later on, with the Excite Truck and Excitebots games, the focus changed to be more focused on tricks and earning stars while still racing well.  However, the element of catching air and landing well still remained.

Loved it, Jude. I believe there was a game, back from the NES time, that was supposed to be a competitor to Sega's Outrun. Just don't remenber the name, but I am almost certain it came from Nintendo. I don 't believe it became a series anyway, so nevermind. Also, the 1080 and Wave Race series are great (although I only played the 64's instalments).

Game Series: Nintendo Racing - Wave Race

Wave Race

Introduced in 1992, the Wave Race series became known for it's realistic water/wave physics.  There was also a focus on a sort of "slalom" type of racing with buoys that you had to pass on the correct side.  Failure to do so would bring penalties, and if you did it too often, disqualify you from the race.

Game Series: Nintendo Racing - Kong Racing
« Reply #6 on: February 17, 2013, 01:32:39 PM »
Kong Racing

Introduced in 1997, the Diddy Kong Racing series was Rare's take on the Mario Kart formula.  However, they did mix things up and add to it as well by having flying vehicles and other improvements.  With Rare's departure, the future of this series is uncertain, especially when it comes to console releases.  However, Microsoft did allow them to develop the DS sequel, so their is some hope.  In the manwhile, the Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast game served as another sequel of sorts to the series, although it wasn't as critically acclaimed.  Whether Nintendo will continue Kong racing series and in what manner remains to be seen.

Other Racing Games

Although these racing games haven't been developed into series yet, they are undeniably Nintendo.  And given how recent these games are, who's to say they won't recieve sequels in the future?

Nintendo has published a number of other racing games on it's various system, but a lot of them weren't first or second-party games, so I don't count them as being "Nintendo racing games/series."  However, I believe the game you're referring to is either Mach Racer or R.C. Pro Am.  The former was developed by HAL (known for the Kirby and Smash series) and the latter developed by Rare (Known for Kong series and many great games on the N64).  I could have theoretically added these to my list, and I still might, but given they were never developed any further, I'm leaving them off for now.

Nintendo did publish one other racing game on the NES called "Rad Racer", but that was developed by SquareSoft (known for the Final Fantasy series), who are definately NOT 2nd-party publishers for Nintendo.

Hey theJude, I noticed under F-Zero: GP Legend you have the listed systems as SNES and Wii V.C but you're showing a GBA game. :P Just thought I'd point that out for ya.

Thanks, TopStar, it's fixed now.  Due to the very ugly BBC code need to make it look nice (a bunch of tables and other stuff), I'd basically make a template and then copy and paste it, and then alter what's in it, which is much easier than doing it from scratch each time.  I must haved missed changing that, which was likely C&Ped from the first entry.
