Doom and Overwatch
« on: June 09, 2016, 03:47:32 AM »
So, there's been a couple big PC releases recently that have been getting a lot of attention and have me genuinely intrigued.

The first is Doom.  While things initially looked sketchy in the way they handled the pre-release, it's actually been getting a lot of great reviews.  The things I've been seeing is that the single-player is probably one of the best single-player FPSs to come out in a long time.  It's fast, fluid, and everything that Doom 3 wasn't, and what a Doom game SHOULD be.  It's also quite long and will take you some time to finish.  I mean, even Yahtzee like it, and he can find things to nit-pick about even some of the best games.

Then there's Overwatch, which, if you haven't heard about this game yet, I'm going to assume you've been living under a rock and don't know what the internet is.  How did you even get here?  Anyways, it also looks like a lot of fun.  It's a multiplayer only FPS, but it's been doing a lot of things right.  It has 21 different classes to play, but they all have their role to play in certain situations.  You can change which class you're playing on the fly, so you're never chained to your choice.  Also, a big thing that's really making me interested is the fact that you don't have to "level up" to get all your abilities.  You get all your abilities from the start and will always be on a level playing ground.  The only deciding factor is your skill, which I think is something we all agree is a good thing (remember that game called... I think it was "Excite-butts" or something... that was skill based and I think the general consensus here was that it was pretty alright).  Tangents aside, it might be a fun game to group up and play, if anyone here would be into that sort of thing.  It's bright and colorful and cheerful and just looks fun.

Anyways, those are the games I'm currently looking into.  Anyone have any experience with either of these and want to chime in?

Just checked out Doom, TJ, looks promising.  $60, but not bad if it's that good.

Watched the trailer on Steam, but I wonder if it will be available non-Steam.....

Well, you can buy Doom for a console if you really want. ::)

But why the *$%# would you want to do that? :P :P :P

Nope, not for a console.  FPS's were built for keyboard/mouse...  ;)

Exactly!  I mean, especially if you're talking about the granddaddy of all FPS's, Doom.  Just seem sacrilegious to play it on a console.  I've seen the PC version in stores like Target and I'm sure you could find it on Amazon, so you should be able to buy the disc to install it.  I'm not sure if you'd need a Blu ray drive, though.  Might want to look closely.

Had to video a wedding Friday (rehearsal) and yesterday (Ceremony and Reception), so I haven't had a chance to look around yet.  But I will shortly...

I have Overwatch on the PS4, I don't have a good enough PC to try to play it, and it is way better than I thought it would be. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a FPS/MOBA hybrid.

Howdy, good to see the site is still going. I try to pop in every once in a while when life isn't so busy. What's everybody up to these days?

Staying way too busy.  Got a list with about 500 projects on it, and it never seems to get smaller.  Really busy year.

Otherwise, just waiting for some Wii parts to come in so hopefully I can get back on the tracks again and play with some of Top's tricks...

Just my 2cents but Overwatch is a pretty good game for being a hybrid of FPS and MOBA. I know I enjoy it a lot. 8)

I'm still playing Overwatch. It's so polished. Anyone else playing currently? Maybe we could group up for a game or two occasionally.
