Game Reviews / Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts

Ninja review!

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts!

It's been a while since I did a review so I'm not sure if I have improved with ages or just gotten rusty... we will see... So I decided to review a game that is my current re-kindled obsession and was also made after a long hiatus. Picture it, Sicily, 2000, Banjo-Tooie came out and slapped us with a teaser for a third game in the franchise. Banjo-Threeie. This was not to pass, however, as corporate bric-a-brac prevented Rare-Ware from developing the anticipated third game. (I used the word "us" but I didn't know about Banjo-Kazooie yet, so I am not included in this.) Flash forward 8? years or so, I forget the specifics, and we got Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. It was nothing like what was expected, and many people hate the game for this reason...

I do not.

The plot is simple. After years of being washed up has-beens, we find our heroes: Banjo, the bear; Kazooie, the bird; and our antagonist; Gruntilda the witch, all looking rather, well, rubbish. Not that they weren't rubbish to begin with, but that is not the point. They want to settle their rivalry that has been about a decade in the making. It wasn't going to go well. Particularly for the players. So this new character, the Lord Of Games, steps in to make things interesting and to help settle the squabble. He fixes up the main characters and gives them some vehicles. At this point the average Banjo-Kazooie fan will have chucked this game into a river out of frustration due to their unrealistic expectations not being met. I digress. Banjo and Kazooie must now use vehicles to complete challenges, collect things and overall just try to outdo Gruntilda.

Unlike Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, platforming has taken the back seat, (PUNS) and vehicles have become the driving force of the game.
You build vehicles using sort of lego blocks that easily snap together. Making a cars is as easy as a seat, four wheels, a fuel tank, and an engine. This is without a doubt the easiest vehicle builder that I  have seen yet.
The gameplay varies between the different kinds of vehicles you make, ranging from driving like a car, free-flying helicopters, all the way to a spring attached to a chair.
What are these vehicles for, aside from moving around, you may ask? Remember those challenges? That what they are for. The challenges range from simplistic to nearly taking refuge in their audacity. One minute you are doing a hurdle race using cars, (or planes) and the next minute you are competing in shot-put using a tank. And the next minute you are playing golf with a vehicle that looks like a boot except the balls are large balloons that look like sheep. AND THE NEXT MINUTE, you are trying to save an I.T. department from a literal firewall using a helicopter.
Each challenge uses a time limit or some other arbitrary progress counter to decide if you actually complete the challenge and if you win of of three possible prizes. The prizes are the same for each challenge, but this is a sort of collect-a-thon game where you want to get as many of these pointless prizes as possible in order to progress and subsequently get more parts.

The game has great sound, boasting a high-quality soundtrack, cool smashing sounds for vehicles, and the voice acting is just grunts, squeals, snorts, burps, and everything in between. In an endearing way. The music is composed by the well-loved Grant Kirkhope, who is well known to do outstanding work, and this game is no exception. Though the songs aren't as catchy as some of his better works.

I always say that it is the gameplay that makes the game, it is a tradition to talk about graphics.
This game looks amazing for its time, though falls flat when it comes to menus. The worlds and characters are bursting with detail (again, for the time) but the menus just feel unpolished.
I like it overall.

Plot: 14 / 19 acres.
Sound: Burps / Belches
Gameplay: Crash / Burn
Graphics: Menus / Scenery
Overall: An amazing vehicle builder / A good sequel.

I will likely be back soon for more reviews.

Well, this one has been a favorite between me and my siblings for a good long while.
I'll cut to the chase and get rolling!

Oh dolly, are you in for a ride!
Let's see... how to do this without spoilers... Ah ha!
We follow Sora, a young boy who is unknowingly the master of a magical weapon called the keyblade. He lives on a tropical island with his friends until some real bad juju goes down and rips his world a new one.
Sora searches for his friends and makes new ones on the worlds he visits.
Almost all of the worlds take place in the different worlds of disney.
This sounds like a good ol' time, but there are these monsters called heartless running amuck everywhere and only the keyblade and get rid of them for good.
Also, it turns out that the king of disney has gone missing with nothing more than a letter as a lead.
This is a tale of good, evil, not so evil, surprisingly good, friendship, miracles, adventure, and this is sounding way too much like the princess bride...
Anywho, it is a bit of a heartwrencher with no small amount of humor.
And if you don't feel like this is enough of an emotional roller coaster,  then the many sequels will.

Phew, now that's over, I can move on to:
Lots of varying music always captures the moment.
Voice acting ain't too shabby either.

Alright, gotta calm down.
This is a real time rpg where you level up, equip stuff and choose what abilities to use.
Combat feels fluid and allows multiple approaches, like you can be a mage, healer, fighter, damage sponge, or a combination. I like combining damage sponge, healer, and special move user.
There are also gummi ship stages which work like most 3d flying shooters.
The controls for there are a little slippery and touchy.
Overall, the controls for platforming are a little rough and the camera is a little rough to get used to.

The movie clips are cool, but unskippable which becomes annoying during the tough (most of the) boss fights.

Spoilers: the questions at the beginning of the game determine when you set out on your adventure, metaphorically speaking. Morning makes you level up quickly in the beginning but slower at the end. Night is the opposite. Day is normal growth all through.

All in all, I would rate this game a 8/10. It is great, but has its flaws.

I hope that you guys are enjoying these as much as I am making them.

Game Reviews / [PS1] Spyro the Dragon
« on: May 04, 2015, 07:23:42 PM »

Ahh, Spyro, Such a dear game to my family. I won't let that get in the way of my review, but I just wanted to get that out there. ::)

Spyro the Dragon is a 3D action/collect-a-thon platformer game starring Spyro the dragon.

The plot is that Gnasty Gnorc (the bad guy) has learned a spell to turn gems into creatures to fight for him and how to imprison the dragons of Spyro's world in crystal. Spyro was able to hide and escape Gnasty's spell and must save the rest of the dragons, collect the missing treasure, and toast Gnasty.

The sounds are vibrant and unique, with each level and each enemy being unique in music and voice. The style of music is unique and every song feels fitting to the area.

The controls are solid and easy to pick up. It is a little hard to get used to the controls after playing Spyro 2 or 3, though. The gameplay involves a lot of scavenger hunting and puzzle solving. Combat is also a very large part of the game. Each of the 5 or so home worlds has a completely different feel and plenty of levels to fit the theme.

The graphics are colorful and vibrant. They are very cartoonish, especially with character design. The game uses a unique fog effect where models look more detailed the closer you are.

Spyro himself separates himself from other platforming heroes with his abilities to glide, charge, and spit fire. He can also fly during certain levels.

Gems are very satisfying to collect and each dragon saved give a short, and often humorous conversation.

9/10 This game is a champion of it's time.

Game Reviews / [3DS] Smash bros.
« on: April 28, 2015, 11:33:08 AM »
We all know and love the Smash bros. series, but does this installment live up to the family name?

Smash bros. is a fighting game based around Nintendo's most popular characters as well as a few others.

The plot is, there is no plot... yeah, I think that sums it up.

GRAPHICS: Good. Crisp, clear visuals and a smooth framerate make sure that smashes look glorious. The models look smooth and rounded. The stages are not too shaby either. They make every match look unique.

GAMEPLAY: Simple controls and a physics system that make sense make this an easy game to play. Don't take this the wrong way though, the game is hard when you want it to be. It can go from punching bag to perfection with a single button.

NEW STUFF: OH BOY, OH BOY. Nintendo really outdid themselves with this one. Here's a list of some of the new stuff.
1. Lots of new fighters
2. Equipment for your fighters
3. Alternate special moves that can be unlocked
4. Mii fighters, which are very customizable
5. Smash run mode; it's like city trial from Kirby Air Ride but with smash gameplay.
6. Omega stages; with a button press, any stage can be final destination! No more boring, non-game specific backgrounds for me.
7. DLC; this means that mewtwo is back.

SOUND; Good stuff. Plenty of memorable songs, but no way to choose which ones to have play. Most of the original songs are just the same one song, but it is epic so that's ok.

Overall, I rate this game a 9.5/10. Lots of unlockables, customization, and fighters will keep you buzy for a while and that's not even going into the multiplayer. Lack of music options and a few missing fighters is sad though.

Is anyone else beyond excited for the new smash bros?
I am, and I hope to get it on christmas. (Along with Pokemon Omega ruby and Y which I am super stoked for)
I'll be posting my friend code on this thread when I get the game.
My mains will probably be; Bowser, Brawler Mii, DeDeDe, Bowser Jr, and Charizard.
I absolutely love the fact that they allow customizations when fighting other people. (Only with friends if I'm correct, but still!)

I'm pretty darn happy. I raced against TheJude last night and only lost by 60 points, and I got the 1st place bonus.
Let it suffice to say, I did better than I thought.
I also raced with Agent C, but not for as long.

Huzzah and yay verily!
A chance at salvation!
My Wii almost broke once before and is still a little wonky. (Ragging-fragging people messing with the homebrew channel settings.) So I'm going to try it sometime in the future.
My chance of playing with you guys this summer has gone up fifty-fold!

General Discussion / Suggestions for new games
« on: May 16, 2014, 01:01:16 PM »
Hey folks,
No doubt you know about the Wii server shutdown, so I think that it's high time that we start thinking of new games to play!
I would like to make the first suggestion.
It is a silly game currently out for the xbox 360 and xbox one. (Soon to come out for pc.)
It is called Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare.
I plan to get it this Christmas and play it until the xbox 360 servers shut down in 2016.
I plan to switch over to the ps4 by that time and hopefully it will be out for the ps4 by then.
It does require a gold account though, which I lack at this point.

I will likely be on Saturday night, all Sunday, Monday night, and Tuesday night.
I made the stupid decision to opt to work over the weekend so I don't push off any work  for next week (last week of school.) :'(
P.S. My brother just stocked up on mountain dew of all kinds.
P.P.S. I'm moving the Wii back into my room tonight.

I'm going to take this moment to apologize for and regret not playing with you guys more. I'll try to get my Wii back into my room after a long winter break in my sister's room. I will be at my full potential and I expect you guys to as well.  :'( Should we also start looking for new games we can enjoy together?

All I can say is that it's Friday night.  Just got home, have a few things to do including supper and a show, but by 10-11pm EST I'm hoping to see somebody from any tier to do some practicing with.  Let's get some of the 'old crew' in there for a change and have some fun, eh?   ;)
Darn it. I missed it... I was busy finishing borderlands 1/starting borderlands 2 with my brother.

That would probably depend on a few things, Rex.  Certain tracks favor certain racers, so everybody has their 'power' tracks.

But for overall scoring, TopStar has a thread that lists everyone we know about according to average scoring and per-track top scores.  Actually, there's quite a bit of info in those threads.

I haven't looked at it in a while, but I think there are about 20 or more people who can whip up on me regularly...
Lol  ;D I mostly wanted an excuse to see what everyone thought of any/everyone else as sort of a social experiment. (He he)

Because I'm new here, I'm curious. Who is the best racer here?
1. You can't vote for yourself. (I don't want to see any gloating.)
2. You can vote for more than one person.
3. I can't think of any other rules, so at this point, have fun!  :P

Nope.  I still run mine online now just for practice and to keep the rust off as much as possible in case we ever get some private rooms going again, but I never bet anymore.

Do you race much, Bio?  I never see you in...

To be honest, I don't race much since I got boulder...  : /   I'm currently dealing with a couple other obsessions right now. Warship gunner 2, Ratchet and Clank 1, and Borderlands namely. There are a few others, but those are the biggest of note. I might be on Saturday some time between 10 A.M and 2 A.M (Forum time.) I'll post a shout on Friday to confirm.
