PS3 Accessories - 7.1 surround set wireless Headset
« on: October 16, 2011, 11:11:15 PM »
Well, I got my tethered Triton TAX 720 (?) about two years ago and I can tell you that having surround-sound in headphones is definitely one of the more family-friendly accessories to own.
Add to that the ability to mix in-game voice-chat into the audio and all the rest of the house hears are weird-sounding one-sided conversations and expletive-filled whinging (e.g. "@#$&*! hacker!" ) :)

The only criticism I have is that it's a "tethered" unit, meaning that there's a cable draped across the floor between console and sitting position

A few months back Sony released a wireless headset, original RRP of around US$160 but we can pick these up in Oz for around Au$100, less shipping. It's got a mutable and retractable mic but unlike my Tritons (which I think are still pricier because they have come with an optical D-A converter headphone amplifier), it won't for some reason provide surround sound for Blu-Ray movies.

They are also not the prettiest cans in town but for wireless gaming headsets, I guess they do the job. The fact that they also use a USB dongle suggest that by now these might also be usable on a PC if people do some research.

A word of warning - never tell any FPS player you're using surround sound as they see it as having a "n00b advantage" worse than using a keyboard and mouse... I don't think so...
