Wii Buzzing Noise
« on: October 29, 2012, 02:24:39 AM »
Since this is hardware related, I'll post my rant here.

Every since mid-late 2010 my Wii has been making a buzzing noise that sounds like this.

I've been able to ignore it and get used to it up until now. I took a break from that Wii and played on the other Wii. When I came back to it, I couldn't stand the noise. The solution is simple...once you open the Wii up (that's the hard part).

It's unfortunate because the Wii that buzzes has my 12K win profile on it. I thought about taking a HUGE gamble and using homebrew to transfer the save data from the buzzing Wii to the quiet Wii. The problem with that is, I'd have to install homebrew on the other Wii, save the data of my ZLP, then proceed to delete the data off the Wii, not knowing whether the save file that has my ZLP on it would ever be usable again. I'm also unsure if save data could be transferred to other Wiis.

Maybe I'll get used to it again since I did go 6,000+ races with that sound going through my ears. I just wish it wouldn't be so loud like a car with a bad muffler.

I don't know about homebrew and moving profiles to another Wii. ::) That sounds a bit risky. I wouldn't describe that sound as a buzz. It's more like a saw cutting through wood. :o That would drive me crazy. :-X

Sounds like your drive spindle bearing is going, but could be a number of things.

You may have already seen it, but here's one demo:

Yep, I've seen many how to open videos. I don't have access to a tri-wing screwdriver though which makes getting those screws out very hard. ::)

This is the problem causing the noise:

Very simple solution but like I said, opening it is the hard part. :'(

It gets worse over time. When you first start playing the Wii on any given day it's starts off as just a buzz but then it gets louder the longer the Wii is kept running with a disc in.

From what I read, this is a problem most commonly had with launch Wiis or Wiis purchased around that time...

Top,

Since you're already experimenting with Homebrew, you can always copy the Ebot DVD data on the wii's hardrive or use a USB drive like I have. Either way, you'll be able to bi-pass the disc all together.... well at least for Ebots, which I assume is about the only game you play.  :-*

For the first time since Summer of 2010, I can finally play EBots on my 10K profile WITHOUT hearing that horrible buzzing noise. ;D

Huge thanks to you BIG AIR. IT WORKS AND I'M PLAYING EBOTS...

All I needed to know was how you accessed your gaming library. ;D

I'm using a 16GB flash drive, not a hard drive. EBots takes up only 0.89 GB of data. :o Everything was running smoothly and fast which is great. The only concern I have is possibly ruining the USB drive if I'm using it as the "disc" replacement. I would assume it's as strong as a disc and will last as long as a disc would...

I would love for it to on the Wii's memory but I don't think there is enough space for that since the Wii wasn't designed to store games. ::)

Your 16 gig should last a LONG time. Plus even if it fails... it's just the game data, not your profile data.
You should be good.
and quiet
Holy CRAP!!!!! I just realized that this MAY HELP you do better.  After much thought and reflection..... I've decided that the NEW QUIET ExciteBot game is a danger to you. You must IMMEDIATELY revert to the old noisy disc. It's for your protection........................ and OURS. 8)

Top, are you running your 16 gig thingy off the noisy Wii or the quiet Wii? I'm wondering if I can transfer my game data to a removable drive and use it on my existing Wii, and avoid running the noisy disk drive.

The 16GB flash drive is being used on the noisy Wii, to avoid inserting a disc and hearing the awful buzzing. I essentially have two copies of EB now, one on disc and the other on file on the USB.

The process is a bit long and tricky in some parts but the end result is worth it. You could store your entire Wii collection on a hard drive and you could just access any game in your collection on a menu. Think turning your disc games into WiiWare games basically.

I can shoot you a PM with what I did if you'd like.

I would love to have all my games ready without inserting a disc. Does this require the Homebrew channel and "hacking" your Wii? I think I have a 32GB flash drive around here somewhere.

That's the great feature about VC and Wiiware games, that you can access them anytime you like.

It's great and yes it does. I'll shoot you the same PM I sent DynamO.

I forgot to mention in the PM DynamO that I have the 4.3u update on the Wii. I suggest updating it to that if you have an update lower than that.

The HomeBrew allows you to custom configure your games on your Wii.
But it Doesn't mean that you've Hacked any individual game functions.

They always cause me concern, too.  And, it wouldn't kill me if I lost a profile or two, and I have at least 5 EB discs...

We've been having this same problem ever since we got our Wii (got it used).

It had been getting worse until finally the Wii was having problems reading the disc. We'd have to eject the game, turn off the Wii and start the process over. Sometimes, we'd have to do that several times.

Bought a new Ebots game/disc this Christmas and that seemed to help. . . . For about a month. Now it's worse than ever and the Wii sounds like it's dying a slow, painful death.

We picked up a second Wii not realizing the problems with transferring the data. . . . .Sooooo, from a not too tech savvy guy, what do I do? I read about what you did TopStar and your input BigAir. Do I need to use Homebrew to copy the disc onto a USB? Or, is there a way to transfer the information to the new Wii? What makes the most sense?

Hey Coyote! For the disc reading problem have you tried cleaning the lense inside the Wii? That could be the issue but regardless, that won't solve the buzzing issue.

I can't say for sure which option is best because I've only tried the USB method. I didn't want to risk my save data. I'll send you the guide I wrote up with the info you need to know (Yes, it does require hacking your Wii with the Homebrew channel).
