Nintendo to Discontinue Some Services for the Wii This June
« on: April 17, 2013, 05:54:01 PM »
Information linked below:

http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/tiQImp7Oi97LiEyVqwDqL-eDnX6u9qjk

Several of the channels offered with the Wii will no longer be working. Also take note that WiiConnect24 will no longer be available for games meaning for us ExciteBoters, we won't be able to save or send replays to one another or to ourselves. :(

As far as online gameplay, that's still safe so don't panic. :)

Thanks for the link.

I suspect that these services cost Nintendo almost nothing. IMO, this is a transparent attempt to nudge the Wii towards premature obsolescence. I will not be strong-armed into upgrading.

The odd thing is that they have been rolling out additional video services for the Wii, which has the exact opposite effect.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I seem to recall that hacking your Wii involves Wii messages. Perhaps they are trying to slow that down as well.

I haven't used those channels in ages due to lack of interest in them. The WiiConnect24 is really the only bummer here because it'll disable the saving replays/challenges feature for EB. I'll just have to record replays as they are done instead.

It does make you think how long they'll keep the online going for games. That shouldn't be going away this soon though because if I'm not mistaken, Mario Kart DS (2005) is still functioning online even after MK 3DS came out.

Yeah, I saw something about this in my Facebook feed a few days ago.  I was initially worried, but after I looked at it, realized there wasn't really anything I was going to miss.  I've never used much of the WiiConnect24 services, although I'm aware there are some here who do.  Other than that, though, it's just a bunch of services that I don't think I've ever cared about.  I honestly don't think I ever used the weather or news channels, so I don't really feel any loss there.

As for worrying about servers, I really don't think anyone here has to worry for some time.  The Wii U's lineup is still very limited right now.  After the initial launch, there have been precious few releases for it.  At this time, having the Wii backwards compatibility and thus access to it's library is one of the main things it has going for it.  If they were to start cutting out the online services of these games by taking down servers, this would severely lesson the draw they get with backwards compatibility.  Until the Wii U's library gets larger and more substantial (something that's not going to happen for AT LEAST 2-3 more years), I wouldn't worry about them taking down servers.
I don't always play videogames, but when I do, I prefer Excitebots.  Keep spinning, my friends.  8)

As far as I know, they must do this through an update. I found that therewas an update for my system today. I am not updating until I know what it does, hence keeping Wiiconnect 24.

You can't dodge the cancelling of the services by not updating your Wii. I checked online and the latest version is still 4.3...and considering you have a modded Wii...I wouldn't recommend updating anyways.

Huh....I just sent myself a replay....and it went through. Maybe we can still shoot replays to ourselves but just not to others. That's good...because that's all I used it for anyways. :))

So the Replays and Challenges feature isn't completely broken. :P
